GUMPTION
We all need more gumption in our lives
Gumption is a wonderful word that is not used enough in the UK. It is a noun that refers to courage, resourcefulness, and spirited initiative.
Other ways to understand it include boldness, fortitude, determination and bravery, all characterised by action towards something meaningful and worth solving. Gumption requires energy, enterprise, hustle and the desire to tackle bold challenges. It is the ability to make things happen, use good judgement, common sense and intuitive wisdom.
I am always looking at how to get more gumption in my life, and at the start of a new year I make sure the pursuit of gumption is on my mind. Here are some of the ways I try to build gumption:
Say yes to a new opportunity that I do not feel I am fully ready for or am unsure how to start
An example is that recently I was asked by a Chinese education group to help them find a British partner school for a commercial relationship. I have not got involved in such a project before, but I immediately said yes, and have since been rapidly learning what is needed. However, involvement in this project has led to 3 new opportunities emerging I would never otherwise have had, and I have new skills I can use.
Identify one bold step I can take daily (small things like speaking up more, asking for feedback, starting conversations)
I have never felt comfortable sharing my views widely on social media, but earlier this year I vowed to post daily on LinkedIn, as well as comment on other people’s posts.
Pick options quickly and go for it - if it fails, just ask, “what did I learn?”
For really important decisions that will have big consequences, I make a decision as soon as I am 50% confident. I will learn more from the process of doing, so it is best to get started.
For decisions that won’t have long-term importance, I make a decision within 30 seconds.
If something does not go to plan, I focus on how I can learn and improve for next time, and I move on.
What would gumption look like in your life?
Charlie
